Wham! A sickening sound of something cracking brought me to my feet. It was windy outside, gusts punctuated by gasps of silence. The noise invaded that silence, and I walked quickly to the front door to look out. Was a window broken? I checked all of the downstairs windows and found them solid. I looked out the front window at my car. The "Wham!" became clear as I saw a tree branch laying across the front of my car.
I donned my jacket, pulled a black skull cap down over my fuzzy, uncombed hair and slipped into my sneakers before heading out the front door.

A gust whipped at the branch in my hand, and I threw it viciously into the middle of my yard. "I can charge you more if you want," the repairman joked. I laughed. I was just so relieved to find out this wasn't going to cost an arm and a leg.

My experience with a cracked windshield was not going to be the catastrophe I had originally imagined.
